Pastor’s Column
We are at the threshold of a new church year. We are about to gear up for new opportunities for learning and service. The nominating team has been diligently at work and has all the teaching posts filled. Thank God for willing workers! September 6 marks the celebration of Labor Day.
Indulge me as I use this column for a prayer.
Heavenly Father, beyond space and time, yet deep within our hearts, we approach you in awe and love. We offer our prayers to you because you have given us minds to think and tongues to speak. We are all-too-aware of the mystery of life. Yet, you invite us to learn. We cannot imagine that our world is a mystery without meaning, a process without a point, a universe unable to be understood. Stretch our minds as we live and pray, O God, to know you and your world more fully.
We offer our prayers to you because you have given us hands to labor. We are grateful for the men and women before us who have given us by their labors a strong and vibrant country. The passion to make has driven the industrial and the technological revolutions that have made our country free and strong. Strengthen our hands, so that we may follow the example of our Lord, who said, “My Father is still working, and I also am working.”
We offer our prayers to you because we have suffered. We have been beset with sickness, troubled with confusion, and experienced bereavement. Help us to learn that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint. Our hope is in you, the God of all mercy, the God of all comfort.
We offer our prayers to you because we have sinned. We have failed you and others by foolish passions and vain ambition. Seeking our own way, we have found ourselves in a wilderness. May your Holy Spirit convict us of our need for you and turn our hearts back to you. Give us hearts that love you and one another.
So, take our minds and think through them, take our hands and work through them, take our tongues and speak through them, and take our hearts and set them on fire. Amen.
I look forward to seeing you Sunday.
Pastor Wayne

CRAZY LOVE: Have you ever wondered if we’re missing it?
It’s crazy if you think about it. The God of the universe — the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and e-minor — loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss.
Whether you’ve verbalized it yet or not . . . we all know something’s wrong.
Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts — it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis Chan describes it, you will never be the same.
Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.
Join us on Sunday evenings, starting on September 12th at 6:00 p.m. for the "Crazy Love" book study. Discover more about the book at www.crazylovebook.com. Brian Harper will facilitate this challenging ten-week study in the church library. Books are available for $9.00. Contact the church office or see Brian on Sunday to reserve your copy.
YOUTH DISCIPLESHIP: Parents’ Help Needed
Youth Discipleship begins on Sunday evenings starting September 12th; at 6:00 p.m. Parents are asked to provide Snack Suppers that will be served following the Discipleship Study. Please contact the church office or me to be added to the Snack Supper calendar, or sign up in the church foyer.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
My name is Rachel Szczepinski and I am the newly appointed College Director at Lane Avenue Baptist! I am excited to be serving with a church that is passionate about God and has a vision to reach out to college students! I graduated from Ohio State in 2006 with B.A. in Comparative Cultural Studies, and felt called by God to college ministry. For the past 4 years I have been serving with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at Ohio State.
College is a crucial time for young men and women. They face challenging choices in an environment that assumes God is irrelevant. My desire is to see students and faculty transformed by Jesus, campuses renewed by the gospel and work changers developed.
This year I will have a dual role, continuing to serve with InterVarsity and Lane Avenue. Some goals I have for this year:
- Increase the size of the current College group
- See students transformed by God’s Word and engaging in outreach to their campuses
- Lead students in integrating their faith into their studies and career decisions
- Foster creative partnerships between Lane Avenue and InterVarsity
Thank you for your support of college ministry! If you would like to know more about the ministry or are interested in volunteering in any way, please e-mail (rachel@lanechurch.com), Rachel Szczepinski

WOMEN’S MORNING BIBLE STUDY
An invitation is extended to all LABC women to join us, as we begin our fall Bible Study on Tuesday, September 14th, at 9:15 a.m., in the library, with an informal introduction time. Our next Bible study will be “The Truth Project” produced by Focus on the Family. A synopsis: In a recent study, the Barna Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world. Only 9 percent of professing Christians have a biblical worldview. Because of this, today’s believers live very similarly to non-believers. A personal sense of significance is rarely experienced, we spend our money and time on things that fail to satisfy and we begin to wonder what life’s ultimate purpose really is. We are, in short, losing our bearings as a people and a nation. To counter this slide within the body of Christ, we are launching one of the most ambitious and powerful projects in the history of our ministry—Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project. The Truth Project is taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. God continues to call ordinary people to make an eternal difference in our world. Bagels and coffee will be served. We will meet the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, at 9:15 a.m., in the LABC library. You may contact Christie Michael with any questions.
