Pastor’s Column

I am appreciative of Paul Althoff singing a solo last Sunday. The song he sang was one of my favorites: "His Eye is On the Sparrow", and Paul sang it from his heart.  The lovely flowers were arranged by Bonnie, his wife. I am appreciative of her sense of beauty.

The Senior Adults visited the new Stowe Center to take the donations of food and school supplies that you have generously provided, as well as tour the facilities. We arrived before 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday and found people of all ages standing in line for lunch.  They feed 300 or so people daily there, and every month Kathy Leach and her helpers prepare one of those meals. We saw the worship facilities, associational offices, food bank (operated by the Salvation Army), the eye clinic and dental clinic. We also saw the facilities for the Christian Women’s Job Corps.  We can all be proud of the inner city ministry of Southern Baptists in Columbus.  Part of each Sunday’s offerings go to help support this mission work.  I am grateful to Linda Omohundro, our Senior Adult Director, who plans such varied activities for us.

Last Thursday I attended the Child Nurturing Center’s graduation ceremony.  One of our children, Nick Eggleton, graduated.  It was a treat to see the program, featuring the singing and Bible learning of the children of all ages. The costumes were first-class. We are fortunate to have a caring and talented director of this vital ministry, Janet Buechner. Let us keep her and her staff in our prayers.

We had a lot of children last Sunday in our children’s ministry.  I am so appreciative of all the people who volunteer to provide a needed safe and loving environment where children can come to know the love of Jesus.

Last Saturday we had a good turn out for work day at the church.  The lawn looks very nice and I am thankful for the leadership of the Property Committee.  The college students, under the leadership of Rachel Szczepinski, turned out in very good number.  My thanks to all who came to work in beautifying the campus.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday.

Pastor Wayne

In His Service,

Tracy

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

My name is Rachel Szczepinski and I am the newly appointed College Director at Lane Avenue Baptist! I am excited to be serving with a church that is passionate about God and has a vision to reach out to college students!  I graduated from Ohio State in 2006 with B.A. in Comparative Cultural Studies, and felt called by God to college ministry. For the past 4 years I have been serving with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at Ohio State.

College is a crucial time for young men and women. They face challenging choices in an environment that assumes God is irrelevant. My desire is to see students and faculty transformed by Jesus, campuses renewed by the gospel and work changers developed.

This year I will have a dual role, continuing to serve with InterVarsity and Lane Avenue. Some goals I have for this year:

- Increase the size of the current College group

- See students transformed by God’s Word and engaging in outreach to their campuses

- Lead students in integrating their faith into their studies and career decisions

-Foster creative partnerships between Lane Avenue and InterVarsity
Thank you for your support of college ministry!  If you would like to know more about the ministry or are interested in volunteering in any way, please email or call me at: rachel@lanechurch.com

Current College/Career Group Events:

SENIOR ADULT NEWS

Our own mission – The Stowe Center has a brand new facility that everyone has wanted to see.  We will be going on a tour Tuesday, August 24th.  We would like to take them a big box of school supplies for the kids they serve and for the tutoring program, so please begin collecting items.  Please meet at the church at 10:30 a.m.  We will have lunch after the tour.  There is a sign-up sheet outside the Old Fellowship Hall.

The Church Office will be closed on Monday, September 6th, in observation of Labor Day.  Evening activities scheduled Wednesday, September 8th, have been cancelled.

WOMEN’S MORNING BIBLE STUDY

An invitation is extended to all LABC women to join us, as we begin our fall Bible Study on Tuesday, September 14th, at 9:15 a.m., in the library, with an informal introduction time.  Our next Bible study will be “The Truth Project” produced by Focus on the Family.   A synopsis:  In a recent study, the Barna Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world. Only 9 percent of professing Christians have a biblical worldview. Because of this, today’s believers live very similarly to non-believers. A personal sense of significance is rarely experienced, we spend our money and time on things that fail to satisfy and we begin to wonder what life’s ultimate purpose really is. We are, in short, losing our bearings as a people and a nation.  To counter this slide within the body of Christ, we are launching one of the most ambitious and powerful projects in the history of our ministry—Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project.  The Truth Project is taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life.  God continues to call ordinary people to make an eternal difference in our world.  Bagels and coffee will be served.  We will meet the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, at 9:15 a.m., in the LABC library.  You may contact Christie Michael with any questions.

FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE/

Catch-Up Sunday

On Sunday, August 29th, we will have Catch-Up Sunday.  You will find offering envelopes in the pew pockets on August 29th, for giving your extra tithe or to give an extra offering. Thank you for your support of the many ministries of Lane Avenue Baptist Church!

STOWE UPDATE

Dear LABC family,

We served 295 people at Stowe Baptist Center Soup Kitchen in August. I would like to thank Jenifer Wilkerson and Mary Rae Hayhurst who helped prepare and serve the meal.  Their love and service to God’s people is most appreciated.  I could not do it without your prayers, financial support, willingness to cook, and to go and serve are needed.  We cook on the third Monday of every month, and then serve on Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m.  I’d love to have you cook, serve, or participate any way you can.  This ministry is greatly needed.  I appreciate all of your efforts so much.  Your sister-in-Christ, Kathy Leach
