Pastor’s Column
It is good to be back in Columbus after a week of vacation. It is important to recharge our batteries and renew relations with our families. Vacations also afford us an opportunity to engage others in service for the Lord.
School is about to begin for many of our youth. I have been reminded that this is an opportunity for us to pray for our schools, students, teachers and administrators. To that end, I offer up the following prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the life you give us, a life in which you invite us to be conformed to the image of your Son. We remember that he grew in wisdom, stature and in favor with you and his fellow human beings. We cherish the opportunities you have given us to go to school, to learn of you in church, and to take up our various places of serving you and others in our church and community.
We would commend to you the children and youth of Lane Avenue Baptist Church. As they begin the new school year, we ask that you keep them safe in body and sound in mind and spirit as they embark on another year of learning. We pray that they will learn more of the mysteries of this world that you have created, that they will think your thoughts after you. Grant that they will come to learn to establish wholesome relationships with others, and that they will be tender-hearted toward those who are less fortunate. Help them apply themselves diligently to their lessons, to study to show themselves approved unto you, workers who need not be ashamed.
We also pray for those who instruct them. We are thankful for our schools and their faculties. We are grateful that in our church there are people who have dedicated themselves to help their pupils marvel at this glorious universe. Help them to be sensitive to the students, as well as to offer them challenges that will stimulate their sense of wonder. Grant them health and wisdom.
We would also pray for those who serve in the administration of our schools. Give them a sense of justice, together with a penchant toward compassion and fairness. We thank you for their willingness to devote themselves to making our schools places of growth for body, mind and soul. Prosper their endeavors
How you have blessed our country! To you we offer our praise, world without end. Amen.
I look forward to seeing you Sunday.
Pastor Wayne

In His Service,

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
My name is Rachel Szczepinski and I am the newly appointed College Director at Lane Avenue Baptist! I am excited to be serving with a church that is passionate about God, His Word, His people, and has a vision to reach out to college students!
I graduated from Ohio State in 2006 with a B.A. in Comparative Cultural Studies. Upon graduating I felt called by God to college ministry. For the past 4 years, I have been serving with a Christian college ministry, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IV). IV is a national organization that desires to see college students and faculty transformed by Jesus, campuses renewed, and world changers developed. I believe that college ministry is crucial and I am committed to reaching students for several reasons:
o God used Intervarsity to greatly impact my life spiritually while I was a student at Ohio State. I developed a passion for studying God’s Word, made deep, lasting friendships with other Christians, and matured in my faith. I deeply desire that others have the same experience.
o College is a crucial time for young men and women. They are figuring out who they are and who they are going to be, taking in all kinds of new ideas, and asking many questions. I want to offer the truth of Jesus as the answer to their questions.
o The university is where many of our future leaders are being shaped, and they will shape our country and our world. It is a unique place where people from all over the world come to learn. I want to see future leaders who are followers of Jesus Christ.
Over the past 4 years at Ohio State, I have seen hundreds of students make decisions to follow Christ and deepen their relationship with him. Students have been transformed through missional prayer, powerful Scripture study, relevant evangelism, and quality leadership training.
This year I will have a dual role, continuing to serve with InterVarsity and Lane Avenue. Some goals I have for this year:
- Increase the size of the current College group through outreach, hangouts, and other activities
- See students transformed by God’s Word through relevant Sunday School Scripture study
- Develop students’ vision to see their campus as a mission field
- Engage students in outreach to their campuses
- Lead students in integrating their faith into their studies and career decisions
- Foster creative partnership between Lane Avenue and InterVarsity
Thank you for your support of college ministry! If you would like to know more about the ministry or are interested in volunteering in any way, please email me at: rachel@lanechurch.com
The following students will begin college this fall.

Sarah Howard – will attend The Ohio State University

WOMEN’S MORNING BIBLE STUDY
An invitation is extended to all LABC women to join us, as we begin our fall Bible Study on Tuesday, September 14th, at 9:15 a.m., in the library, with an informal introduction time. Our next Bible study will be “The Truth Project” produced by Focus on the Family.
A synopsis: In a recent study, the Barna Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world. Only 9 percent of professing Christians have a biblical worldview. Because of this, today’s believers live very similarly to non-believers. A personal sense of significance is rarely experienced, we spend our money and time on things that fail to satisfy and we begin to wonder what life’s ultimate purpose really is. We are, in short, losing our bearings as a people and a nation. To counter this slide within the body of Christ, we are launching one of the most ambitious and powerful projects in the history of our ministry—Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project. The Truth Project is taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. God continues to call ordinary people to make an eternal difference in our world. Bagels and coffee will be served. We will meet the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, at 9:15 a.m., in the LABC library. You may contact Christie Michael with any questions.

STOWE UPDATE
Dear LABC family,
We served 295 people at Stowe Baptist Center Soup Kitchen in August. I would like to thank Jenifer Wilkerson and Mary Rae Hayhurst who helped prepare and serve the meal. Their love and service to God’s people is most appreciated. I could not do it without your prayers, financial support, willingness to cook, and to go and serve are needed. We cook on the third Monday of every month, and then serve on Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m. I’d love to have you cook, serve, or participate any way you can. This ministry is greatly needed. I appreciate all of your efforts so much. Your sister-in-Christ, Kathy Leach
